Spraying with a spray gun? (not an aerosol)
If you are intending to spray Plasti Dip, you can buy it ready mixed as a sprayable liquid or use regular liquid Plasti Dip with thinners (up to 50%, up to 10% for top coats).
Instructions for using an aerosol
- In cold conditions, place aerosol in warm water (approximately 21°c) for 10-15 minutes before use
- Shake well before and during use
- Do a test spray on a sample piece prior to application.
- Hold can 15-25cm from the surface when spraying, keeping your hand moving back and forth across the surface while spraying
- Allow 30 minutes minimum between coats. Apply as many coats s desired (3-4 average)
- Allow 4 hours minimum drying time before use
- Coverage is approximately .5 – .9 square metres per can
- After application if can has contents remaining, turn the can upside down and spray for 5 seconds to clear the nozzle before storage
- If blocked, remove nozzle and soak in white spirit
Dipping a car with Plasti Dip
If you are about to dip your first car, start with our guide to car dipping (linked below) which will give you an idea of the quantities of Plasti Dip that you'll need, achieving different finishes, the kind of spray gun we recommend and the preparation work that is required, then follow with our preparation guide. It is vital that before applying Plasti Dip you ensure the surface is clean and free of contaminants and that you have achieved this using the correct cleaners (listed in the guide below).

- Preparation Guide
Plasti Dip Primer is an adhesion promoter. Only use a primer to increase adhesion if you require a permanent coating.
The more coats, the easier it is to remove later
Plasti Dip regular coverage is approximately 20 sq ft (1.85 sq m) per litre. Approximately 3 sq m if spraying. We suggest a minimum of 7 coats for best results. 400ml aerosol coverage is approximately 5-10 sq ft (0.5-1 sq m) per aerosol. As an example, for wheels, we recommend one aerosol spray per 18″ alloy.
Dipping car badges with Plasti Dip
Perhaps you are just wanting to dip your badges. There are lots of helpful videos on youtube and social media which show how quick and easy this process is, but we have included one below to get you started. Simply mask off an area around your badge, spray and peel away the excess!
Preparation is everything
Whether you are dipping badges or an entire car, we can't emphasise enough that preparation plays a really important part in your project. How and what to clean and which products to use and avoid. We recommend using our Plasti Dip dip prep treatment which you can find here.
The essential criteria is to ensure the surface is squeaky clean, grease, dirt, debris and contaminant free and thoroughly dry before coating.
How to protect your finished dip
We have a range of Plasti Dip cleaners, sealants and revivers which you can find on our dip care page.
